Amphawa, Thailand

Title : Amphawa, Thailand
Comments : Along the Mae Klong River. It's possible to pull a boat right up to the booth, tie up and make a call. The town still has a lot of its canals, unlike a lot of Thailand's river cities (including Bangkok), where the canals have been paved over. Other old ways, like phone booths, persist as well.

I'm happy to report that phone booths don't seem to be in any danger of disappearing in Thailand, despite the fact that the country's prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, is the owner of the country's biggest mobile phone service provider.

Everyday, new phone booths are being installed by the state-owned Telephone Organisation of Thailand (TOT) and a private provider, TelecomAsia. There are sometimes complaints in the daily papers that the unregulated installation of phone booths has blocked a street or sidewalk.
