This is a picture of a phone booth i found driving in Fredericksburg, Virginia (540). When I approached the booth to take a picture of it, a scruffy looking man in his 80's took interest in what i was doing. He was just sitting in a lawn chair next to the highway, smoking his pipe. I thought the man was just the old town loony, but in fact he was the owner of the Shell Gas station/ Motel that the phone booth was at. He asked me why i was so interested in the booth and why I was in southern Virginia. After listening to me babble on, about why phone booths are the coolest things in the world he walked into the shop of his gas station. I had no idea where he was going, i just thought he was bored of me. When he came out he had a large rectangular looking thing in his hand. What it was in fact, was a 40 yr. old Bell System phone booth sign. The sign was heavier than a rock, and it was made out of solid glass. He said that the Bell Line's Man had given it to him when the changed the signs. This old loony was the coolest man in the world. He kept telling me about the booth in detail, and how in the shop he used to have an old farmers crank telephone. I attempted to get the phone number of the pay phone but somebody had taken it out. I then dialed the Automatic Number Identification Circuit at the central office to find out the number. For some reason when i dialed a.n.i. (811) the switch would route me to the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Oh well, it is still an awesome phone booth. |
