Payphones Past

One of the few remaining outdoor NYC payphones where the ANI check matches the number printed on the phone. (718) 520-9592. Most outdoor NYC payphones these days are cellular. When making the switch from copper landline it must have been deemed too much trouble to port the old (718) and (212) numbers to the cellular router. I don’t know if this phone’s retention of its (718) number means it is still landline or if this happened to be of the few where the old landline number was ported to the cellular router. It is always satisfying for me to find an extant payphone that is listed on my website here. It reminds me of when the payphone data pages were not only relevant but useful.

  • Just dialed it to see what would happen - listed as disconnected now. Not sure if that's due to the nature of "no incoming calls" with all phones or if, more likely, this one has met its demise, but for anyone else trying to call it, don't expect much but a very mellow automated response.

    • That phone was still standing as of a couple of weeks ago, but no dial tone. There's still hope.
