Spotted this bit of graffiti on an abandoned Midtown Manhattan payphone enclosure today. I don’t know what it’s about but a web search on some of the names mentioned herewith turned up this puzzling website, which mentions “COINTELPRO”, a secret FBI program (read it as CO-INTEL-PRO) that looks to me more like the name of a real 1990s payphone service provider, Coin-Tel.

Midtown remains something of a ghost town, though signs of life slowly emerge. It’s not the kind of emerging life I’d like to see. Or is it? I don’t even know anymore. I witnessed one dude on Madison Avenue, lying on his side outside a boarded-up hotel, masturbating furiously. That’s the second midtown masturbator I’ve seen in the past couple of months.

I lined up to get video of this person but just when the line of sight cleared he stopped, while at the same time I questioned why I wanted to document this in the first place.

Last week a rail-thin woman, barely clothed, deliberately attempted to collide with me, for what payoff I do not know. I leapt to get out of her way, possibly seeing a smirk on her face, suggesting all she wanted was the reaction.

It’s not what it once was, and maybe it never will be, but I still love Midtown.

Here is my attempt at a transcription of the payphone graffiti. I definitely guessed at the last words, etched around the edge of the enclosure’s surface, but think I got most of this right.
