Seattle: This Payphone Is Probably Doomed

Val Vashon writes from Seattle:

“Here’s the payphone in the West Seattle Junction. The address is California Ave SW and SW Alaska St.”

“This one was functional up until a few years ago – I remember making calls on it. If you look closely you can see that it still wears the “Qwest” livery even though the name of the company changed a couple of years ago to Centurylink. Spray paint covers the calling instructions.”

“At this particular corner of the intersection all the businesses have moved out because a big condo development is going in. I always found it amusing that this payphone was out front of a Verizon store. I picked up the receiver and got no dial tone. I’m suspecting power has been shut off because these buildings are going to be torn down soon. I’m pretty sure this phone won’t make it through the construction.”

“This was the phone number. (206) 932-9778. I tried it and got the “this number is disconnected” message.
