Val Vashon: Payphones Across America

Payphone News contributor Val Vashon writes: “I had to drive a TV satellite truck from Washington State to New Jersey for Superbowl coverage for the local station that I work for. Tried to take a few pay phone pictures along the way.”

Phone Box
Here’s one I spotted out here in New Jersey along the waterfront in the Newport area of Jersey City- Newport Green Park on 14th, to be exact. Looks like a red box, but it actually is used to sell tokens when the park rides are open, presumably in warmer weather. I find it interesting how the phone booth is being co-opted as being desirable for other things, but not phones.
Ohio Travel Plaza
Compared to the dumps along the highway in Indiana, the Ohio travel plazas were virtual palaces. Only one pay phone, however. If there were more at one time that were removed ODOT did a good job of removing any trace of them. Not surprising as the travel plazas, like I said, are very nice. No closeup of the number but I did dial it (440-740-0512) and heard it ring very softly. I don’t remember what travel plaza this was, just that it was somewhere in Ohio. Of note is the TTY device under the phone.
Knute Rockne Travel Plaza
Some pictures of what was and what is at the Knute Rockne Travel Plaza along the 80/90 Toll Road in Indiana. Picture #1 shows the row of former pay phone kiosks; they still stand empty with a single solitary pay phone as shown in photo 2. Photo 3 has the number of this phone (219-778-9823); I did not try it however. I stopped at another Travel Plaza in Indiana and found virtually the same setup- empty kiosks and one phone.

Moses Lake, Washington
Here’s a sad example of what used to be at the Hilltop Mini-Mart, 1802 Kittleson Road, Moses Lake WA.
