Anguilla: Payphone On A Tree Stump

Jim Hannum shares this photo of a payphone located in a somewhat unusual place. Photographed just a couple of months ago this standalone payphone is found on the Caribbean island of Anguilla. But its location in that beautiful place is not what makes it unusual. It’s the fact that this phone is mounted on a treestump.

I swear I have seen others in movies but off the top of my head I can only remember one other sighting of a phone mounted on a tree. It was in this scene from the movie Big House, U.S.A..

The only doubt I have about this is that the film did not make it entirely clear whether the phone seen here was a pay-as-you-go instrument or some kind of courtesy phone. And for that matter it is not evident if the phone is real or just a prop. Either way it cut an interesting profile.

I’ve seen a number of unusual payphone locations over the years. The most striking one I have encountered recently may or may not have been located on the Nicasio Reservoir in California. I have not been able to verify the legitimacy of the photo below, seen in an advertisement for the Benner-Nawman Comopany. If anybody seeing this can vouch for it I’d be happy to hear from you.
