The Payphone system works perfect as it is. Bums and ghetto trash people are too self obsessed these days and would just monopolize it even with a call timer.

Thing is, it was above you on an overhead structure as you went down the subway stairs. I have a picture. Too high for a person to reach with out help. So very unlikely it was that "elderly woman" as is part of the longtime "Pray" legend. But the "handwriting" was very similar to other pictures I have seen online from past instances. You can try this one.

Honestly, though, tracking working payphones in the year 2023 is like captaining a sinking ship.

I think this one will rise again. It has had periods of outages before.
If you call its number (212-475-9707) you hear busy signal.
That’s a clue that the phone’s not dead. Not yet, at least.
It’s only when you hear the infernal beep-beep-beep signal that you know it’s game over.
The phone at Rockefeller Center is in a similar state.

The TTY light still blinks, and the payphone itself is still there, but no dial tone.

I was just looking through my memorabilia box and came across my old phone book of pages torn out of a spiral bound book (likely Chandler’s assignment book.) The apology line and was under “ABC” and I was curious what ever happened to it.

Easy to make a “C” look like an “O.” (Perhaps this was an inside joke.)
