Found a Few Payphones in Kensington, Brooklyn

I found myself in Kensington, Brooklyn, yesterday, after checking in on the next-to-last day of the Morbid Anatomy exhibitat Green-Wood Cemetery’s Fort Hamilton Gatehouse. I would recommend the show highly, except I can’t, because it closed today.

All the payphones I found in Kensington had dial tone. That does not mean they allow you to make a phone call but it is a hopeful sign.

On Church Avenue at East 2nd Street in Kensington I spotted these two phones.

These first two, at Church Avenue and East 2nd Street, show phone numbers both listed on The Payphone Project’s data museum of mostly disconnected payphone numbers. The phone on the left shows 718-438-9218, and is listed on this page at CHRCH AV 19’E/O E 2ND.

The second phone’s number is hard if not impossible to read but appears to be listed on this page as 718-438-9064 at @ CHURCH AV & E 2.

The last payphone I spotted, at Church Avenue and Dahill Road, had no number shown on its façade.

You might ask, why not just dial 1-800-444-4444 and get the payphone number via the MCI ANI check?

I am not looking for these payphones’ current numbers. I’m more interested in seeing how many of them are listed on the old payphone number data museum. Virtually all outdoor NYC payphones are now cellular, their old numbers never ported. Calls from these phones now send caller ID that do not align with whatever number is printed on the phones themselves.

After this payphone hunt I took the G train from Church to Court Square, the complete route of the G. A first for me.
