Union Square Job Center Payphones
I’ve amended my posting from July (Where Can I Find a Working Payphone in New York City?) to include one I rediscovered yesterday. I did believe this phone to have been unplugged but after hiding away since March of 2020 it remains in working order, albeit with a bit of a hum lurking over the call quality. The working phone here is notable for having an info placard with blue lettering. That format is commonly seen on PTS phones in other parts of the country but I don’t remember seeing it in the 5 boroughs. The phone shows “PAYPHONE” as its caller ID.
This working phone (and one non-working) is at the Union Square Jobs Center at 109 East 16th Street. Closed for Covid since March of last year the Jobs Center finally reopened, making one more working payphone available to the public, albeit only during the Job Center’s office hours. These PTS phones are found right inside the front door of the place.
I only discovered these phones for the first time in 2019, after spotting them by chance while conducting a guided tour of payphones in the Union Square area. PTS had no access to these phones while the place was closed, meaning this phone remained in working order that whole time. The other phone had dial tone in 2019 but today it just emits a dull hum and cannot connect calls.
