Payphones Past

Mounting Backplate Where a Payphone Used To Be

I spotted this remnant of a past payphone at the Super Bright Laundromat and Dry Cleaners, 48-03 69th Street, in what many online sources say is Woodside but I think it’s Elmhurst, Queens. Take your pick. Either way the backplate which once held a payphone looks like this one, available from payphone.com: Part #90-12112-00. You probably don’t need a payphone mounting backplate but if you do 23 bucks doesn’t look like a bad price.

Payphone Mounting Backplate at an Elmhurst Laundromat

Laundromats were considered prime locations for payphones back in the day, making them good places to find at least vestiges of them today, if not the moldering, abandoned carcass itself. Click here for a post showing a few dead laundromat payphones I found in 2019.
