First American Telecom has erected 25 state of the art, solar-powered payphone kiosks in the downtown Miami area. The company looks to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars to install more.
“We might not make our fortune, but we’re going to provide payphones to those that need them for years to come.”
The Payphone Project is reminded of the (probably apocryphal) story of the businessman who saw that drive-in movie theaters were closing down en masse. In response to this trend he decided to buy up as many drive-in movie theaters as he could. He made his fortune on those leftover drive-in theaters.
The story about the drive-in theater magnate may not be true. The Payphone Project doubts there are fortunes left to be made in payphones. But the folks at First American Telecom seem to have found that the payphone niche still represents an attractive opportunity for individuals and teeny-tiny businesses.
