Payphone Carcasses of Staten Island

A friend and I found more abandoned payphone carcasses than expected on Staten Island, without even covering half the island. We got stuck in traffic a number of times, and covered long stretches of road where no payphone would ever have been expected to exist. But in the end we had some good finds.

This one is at Richmond Terrace and Wall Street, across from a police precinct and not far from the St. George ferry terminal. I think it took us longer to get to this spot via BQE/car than it would have via subway and ferry. But most of Staten Island is not walkable so we had to have wheels.

 

This one is at All Tire and Service Shop on Forest Avenue.

 

Spotted this derelict sign advertising a non-existent Verizon payphone on Hylan Boulevard.

 

We could not decide if this had been a payphone pedestal or something else of similar dimension. On Hylan Boulevard.

 

This abandoned payphone pedestal was on the corner of a gas station lot on Nelson Avenue just off Hylan Boulevard.

 

This was my favorite of the day. Outside the Net Cost Market on Amboy Street. So low to the ground I don’t know if that’s because it was an ADA thing or if this used to be a “Call From Car” phone.
