Penn Station Payphone User
Penn Station might be the sight of the largest number of payphones under one roof in New York. That dubious distinction formerly belonged to the Port Authority Bus Terminal, before the 100 or so payphones there were whittled down to a few dozen. None of the Port Authority payphones work but they did have dial tone as late as February, 2015. I am not ready to say how many of Penn Stations payphones actually work, but I can report that many of them do not. My attempts to record musicians performing near the station’s payphones often fail, as the call connects but no sound is heard. All the payphones at Penn Station are owned by Pacific Telemanagement Services (PTS), the country’s largest payphones service provider.
