Fort Hays State University - 785-628-4893 It isn't a pay phone, but the chances of talking to someone would be really good, especially after the new semester gets kicked off and more students are on campus. It's found in Wiest Hall on the Fort Hays State University campus Photo by Rex

Romania Payphone - This phone is representative of pre-1989 Romania. Romania is modernizing (not as fast as I would like it), and this species of old, tired payphones is vanishing. photo and comments by cristian stagarescu
Switzerland Phone Booth
The phone is the one inside the booth. Works only on credit cards (actually bank debit cards) and the traditional cards issued by the phone company. (We have only one company yet which makes things much easier than in the USA. Although a little more expensive because of lacking competiion.) The case is metal and painted gray. Photo and comments by R. Seeberger
Switzerland Phone Booth
The telephone booth is made from glass with a round sliding door. A musical jingle greets you when you open the door to enter. At night the top is illuminated. Part of the wall is a poster (advertisement) which is also back-lit at night. Photo and comments by R. Seeberger

U.S. Consulate, Saigon
The US consulate is built on the site of the former US embassy. The tourist brochures say it is a "much more appropriate size" and remark that there's a monument to the "communist martyrs", who died defending the city, in the grounds of the consulate. photo and comments by Aussie Anita.

Uganda Payphone
Payphone on Lake Victoria in Uganda using GSM Technology and Solar Power. Photo sent in by Craig Wheeler, Remkor Technologies South Africa. A surprising number of people seem to think this photo is a fake. It is not fake. It shows a Ugandan fisherman using a solar powered GSM phone. Solar powered + GSM enabled = no wires. In other words, it's a cell phone. Like any cell phone, it can be used virtually anywhere, even from the top of a post in the middle of a lake. It is a *pay* cell phone and that's why you see it on this web site, but it's a cell phone nonetheless. As far as I know there are no limits on using cell phones on boats. The photo may have been staged for publicity use, but that would not make it fake. Cleverness aside, I think Remkor's success in bringing phone service to water-based communities is a brilliant adaptive use of technology.

Antarctica Payphones
Although B155 primarily serves as the nervecenter for McMurdo Station (houses admin, the galley, and our base store) there are some quarters. And in a hallway on the second floor are two card operated Telecom New Zealand payphones. It never occurred to me that we'd have them as everyone has phones in their rooms. Now that I think about it, though, we do need to cater to the dozen or so Kiwis who work here during the summer. It would also make sense to be able to make a local call to Christchurch for making plans once we get off the ice. All phone calls from private and office phones downlink to the US mainland, putting a hamper on someone making a cheap call to NZ. Photos and comments by Bipolar Dave

Just outside the north gate of the Holiday Inn Ledo. The donkey drawn carts are quite a rare sight now in dowtown Beijing. This one caused the mother of all traffic jams as there was another just a bit outside the picture blocking the other lane. Photo and comments by Eric Lerdal
