NYC FDNY Emergency Callbox- Wavy Metal Grids
By the way, not everyone knows the purpose behind these weird-looking wavy metal grids (which happened to be located next to one of the emergency call boxes in this photo series). These metal grids are designed to prevent flooding in underground subway stations that were prone to flooding in the past. - NYC FDNY Emergency Callbox

This mystery payphone is across the street from a jail. There used to be a payphone right outside the Queensboro Correctional Facility, and I assume prison payphones still exist inside. - Mystery Payphone

Payphone Gone, But Not Forgotten
If I have an old photograph of a place I sometimes make a print of the photo and leave it as close as possible to the exact spot where the photo was taken. I did that with this old payphone. I printed out the photo from 2007, and left that photo where the payphone used to be. Read more at Payphone Gone, But Not Forgotten.

Payphone Gone.
This payphone, formerly at (718) 728-9682, stood at this location for decades. Today all that is left is this hole in the sidewalk, and two metal poles.

September, 2008
I first noticed this abandoned payphone on Northern Boulevard in September, 2008, when this picture was taken. The next picture shows that in December, 2011, this empty hull of a payphone still lurked outside an abandoned building that once housed a check cashing business. Payphone Gone?
Across the street I spotted this metal post in the sidewalk. Posts and spikes like this often provide evidence that a payphone used to be present. Once you start looking for these stumps it becomes evident that payphones genuinely used to be everywhere, even in vacant lots and alleyways between buildings.
