Last Phone Booths of Manhattan Island, New York City
Interior of an outdoor phone booth at 66th Street and West End Avenue in Manhattan. The number for this payphone is (212) 874-9588. But don't bother calling. Like most Verizon payphones, this one does not accept incoming calls. There are four remaining outdoor phone booths in Manhattan. In addition to this one, other booths are located on West End Avenue at the corners of 90th, 100th, and 101st Streets.

Like phone booths, these old-fashioned crosswalk indicators are being phased out. They will be replaced by language-neutral LED-based signs. The LED signs are much brighter and much cheaper to operate. But I do prefer the soft, gentle light of the old-fashioned signs.

One of the last four outdoor phone booths in Manhattan. These booths are located on West End Avenue at the corners of 66th, 90th, 100th, and 101st Streets. Closing the door of this phone booth provides a cocoon-like feeling of muffled seclusion. You can hear people talking outside but they sound like Mrs. Othmar, from Charlie Brown's grade school. It is, in fact, a weird feeling to be on a Manhattan city street with such a level of privacy. This cocoon-like feeling used to be common but as outdoor phone booths continue to disappear this feeling is rare.
