I got over my fear of being ridiculed for asking about such things. I staked out an old rotary dial payphone at an NYC eatery, asking permission first of a cashier, then of the store's manager, to enter into a strcture marked "Employees Only". . The cashier responded with the predicted dismissive "No." She was overruled. The manager had no problem with it.

According to Payphone Project data there used to be 2 payphones at this Manhattan restaurant. One phone remains, in non-working order. I was surprised but satisfied to find that its now-disconnected phone number appears in this website's payphone location data museum.

This abandoned payphone by the Port Authority Terminal was, by my analysis, owned and operated either by S.A.C. Vending, a now-defunct payphone service provider from Ozone Park, Queens, or else by Comet Communications, also defunct.

Payphones at The Oyster Bar Restaurant, Grand Central Terminal

It seemed strange to find a couple of payphones inside the bathrooms of the Oyster Bar Restaurant at Grand Central Terminal. When payphones were commonplace it was typical to find them in the shared space outside the actual latrines.
