Payphones Past

Whitaker Street Saloon. Savannah, Georgia. November, 2001.

I passed through Savannah on a road trip from Florida back to New York in late 2001. I caught this picture of a woman using a payphone outside the Whitaker Street Saloon at 37 Whitaker Street in Savannah’s historic district. This photo was taken just 2 months after the events of September 11, 2001, a fact which might explain the American flag and Statue of Liberty décor on the front of the building. I was unaware at the time that the saloon was a strip club once known as the Waving Girl Lounge. According to an October 25, 2005, story at SavannahNow.com the Whitaker Street Saloon was replaced by a barbecue restaurant named Hang Fire. For some reason I only have 2 pictures of Georgia Payphones posted at PayphonePictures.com — this one and another showing a payphone outside El Cheapo Gas in Richmond Hill. I almost certainly have more Georgia payphone images moldering away somewhere, seeing as I spent no small amount of time in Georgia.
