Wisconsin: Old-Style Phone Booth Spotted at the DOT

A friend of The Payphone Project writes from Madison, Wisconsin, to share photos and comments about an old-style phone booth hidden from public view in a government building:

“Thank you for your payphone website.

“The (Wisconsin DOT) building was built in 1964, and is scheduled to be replaced within the next four years, though it still seems rock solid to me.

“Despite added accommodations for extra electronics, handicapped access, signage and safety, artifacts of the era are still part of the building, including the indoor phone booth on the ground floor.”

“While the phone itself has been updated, the smoker’s ventilation fan still works, and the curved glass pocket door made it something special and sleek in the era it was installed.”

“The bolt holes from the original phone install are still quite useable. The phone itself works fine, and a phone book is provided, though without the steel cable and locked binder.”

“This phone booth is NOT in the publicly accessible part of the building.”
