How to use this search engine
- Search by phone number
- Omit all non-numeric characters from your search. If the number you are looking for is 212-555-1212, enter
2125551212.
AREA CODES CHANGE: If you are looking for a number with an area code that you know has recently changed, try entering the
phone number without the area code, or trying entering the number with the old area code. The Payphone Project database is not
connected to any official telephone company database, and area codes in this database are not updated when the phone companies change
them.
If you want to search for a range of payphone numbers, try typing just the area code and the first 3 numbers
of the payphone number. For instance, entering 402451 will produce 35 payphone number in Omaha, Nebraska, in the (402)
area code and with the 451 exchange.
- Search by city name
- Type in a city name. At this time the search engine does not search against individual fields. So if you are looking for all the
payphones in Chicago, you would type in
chicago, and in addition to a list of all the payphones in Chicago which are
in this database, also listed is a place called Mortons of Chicago in New York, NY.
Please know that this database is filled with typos and words which are truncated. If you query this database enough you'll find
that you need to be creative at times to find some things.
