Here is a payphone number and location I wish I had posted a long time ago.

(212) 599-9801 is the number for a Titan payphone located across the street from the United Nations.

Evidently this payphone was used by a runaway to call her mother, who posted here hoping someone could offer more information about the payphone’s exact location.

The trail must have gone cold long ago but this incident helps demonstrate that making payphone numbers and their locations available to the public is not a useless endeavor. I was reminded of the May, 2004, story in the New York Times which described how The Payphone Project helped people find runaways and solve other mysteries via access to payphone location information.

This incident also illustrates why payphones should identify themselves with accurate caller ID information, not the fake caller ID more and more payphones are sending out these days.
