A 5th Avenue Subway Payphone

This horribly blurry and wobbly picture shows a payphone at the 5th Avenue subway stop in May, 2000. For obvious reasons I never posted this picture, but upon seeing it now I think it makes sense to use it as part of this Payphones Then and Now series, showing payphone locations around New York as they looked years ago, and whether or not those payphones exist today.

This payphone has survived, and as if to prove its age this phone still sports a somewhat rare Bell Atlantic logo on its front.

The Bell Atlantic brand should have vanished years ago but it and the logos of other defunct phone companies still survive on some city payphones. In November I wrote about Vestiges of Payphone Brands Past, in which I called out sightings of Bell Atlantic, Bell South, and other defunct brands whose logos still grace today’s payphones.
