Almost Heaven… West Virginia is Teeming With Working Payphones

Photographer Daniel Hopsicker, who has contributed hundreds of photos to this website, reports from West Virginia that the state has payphones aplenty, and most of them even work. In Charleston alone Daniel estimates “hundreds” of phones in working order. Most seem to be owned by Frontier.

Enjoy this series of selected recent photos from Charleston, shot on hand-rolled Arista 400 B&W film, by Daniel Hopsicker. The complete set of West Virginia payphone photos is found at the Payphone Project Photo Gallery. The Jefferson Motel sports a fully intact Airlite phone booth with a working phone, and even with a door that opens and closes. In this year of 2021 that’s a relic tough to find.
