Faded and Fried in Potter County, Pennsylvania

Angela Lutz, who follows the Payphone Project Facebook page, shared these photos of a miserable looking specimen of payphone in Potter County, Pennsylvania, outside the “Home of the Potter County Fair.” The eggshell enclosure actually looks decent enough from the side, save for a few blemishes of rust:

But within that almost new-looking façade lurks rust, rot, and stains of a sorry-looking payphone abandoned long ago.

The eggshell style of payphone enclosure is identical in color and style to one I saw in Brady, Nebraska several years ago.

This style of enclosure also appears to have been common in Los Angeles, if its many appearances in The Rockford Files are any indication.

I don’t know if they were ever quite common in New York City but a blue version of this eggshell enclosure used to stand at Pierrepont Place and Montague Street in Brooklyn, just off the Brooklyn Promenade.
