Payphones Past

Guildford, England. Payphone Action Shot.

Paul Voller, who shared photos of a Quay Ilfracombe Phone Box in the south west of England, and a guided tour of an abandoned phone box in Aldershot, Hampshire, writes again to report a rare sighting. Someone actually using a payphone!

Read Paul’s account below, and be sure check the latest photos from The Payphone Project’s ongoing photo series: Who Still Uses Payphones?

“Image was taken January 13, 2014, in an affluent town in England called Guildford. This phone box stands alone outside of the local magistrates court and car park. I often see people using it – often young and well dressed people (not the usual stereotypes that one associates with payphone usage in this part of the world). He could have been someone who was appearing in court and hence could not keep his cellphone with him (they are not allowed inside court buildings) or perhaps someone with a cellphone and no prepaid credit or juice in the battery. Who knows? As the booth had a door there was no way I could hear what he was saying but he appeared relaxed and happy.”
