I wanted so badly to like this movie but I just couldn't make it happen. A series of distressed individuals receive calls at a remote phone booth from Greta, a mysterious phone friend who offers advice on their dilemmas. The phone booth imagery is evocative, summoning memories of lonely roads and desperate conversations carried out in phone booths. Some of the worst conversations I ever had in my life took place in phone booths, which is only part of the reason I feel no nostalgia for those old structures. As for the movie -- there isn't much here. If you like pretty girls swilling bottled beverages in a phone booth then "Mojave Phone Booth" might be for you. I found the premise interesting but the only thing that got me through this film was the fast-forward button and the search for good phone booth screenshots. The phone booth images do look nice. I might give this film another try some time but on first pass it seemed endless. Near the end of the film Greta reveals that she started calling the phone booth 7 years earlier in the hope of making contact with strangers. I am surprised the Payphone Project did not get a shoutout for that bit of dialogue, since it echoes so closely the words I used to explain my original inspiration for this web site. Oh well.
