Double Indemnity, released in 1944, includes a handful of calls made from phone booths. These booths feature 3-slot rotary dial payphones typical of the era, as well as copies of the Los Angeles Classified Phone Directory. About a half hour into the film Walter Neff (played by Fred MacMurray) directs Phyllis Dietrichson (played by Barbara Stanwyck) to "call from a booth", as opposed to a more traceable residential or office line. Neff's order reflects the clandestine anonymity that criminals and miscreants used to associate with calls made from public telephones and phone booths. Later in the film Neff calls Ms. Dietrichson from a phone booth, this time with a coded message regarding a shipment of soap. This innocuous-sounding call was actually a signal for them to meet at a particular supermarket to discuss the evolving sprawl of their crime. With just these momentary calls made from public telephones it seems the role of the phone booth in Double Indemnity is limited.
