This astonishing quantity of public pay telephones occupies a prime chunk of real estate at New York City's Penn Station. It gleams like a beacon from the past when central transit hubs like this had abundant public telephones for the harried traveler who needed to reach someone upon arriving in or departing from New York. This room of payphones almost looks like some kind of museum but it is, in fact, supposed to be a functioning suite of payphones for the public to use. It is not a payphone museum (yet). This room is a payphone ghetto, a telephonic slum, a twilight zone for communications. Maybe some day it will be declared a museum but for now it's just another example of false hope for anyone whose only option for making a phone call is a public pay telephone.
