I spotted this old-style wood phone booth last week at an NYC dive bar. This booth and its interior accoutrements closely resemble the semi-famous phone booths at the New York Public Library.

With its overhead light, a slab of wood on which to sit, and a non-working fan that once circulated air in this stuffy column of telephony it seems that the make and model of this phone booth is similar if not identical to the aforementioned NY Public Library booths.
This booth has probably been at this spot for over 50 years.
Phone booths have largely faded from the realm of outdoor street furniture but you can still spot old cabinets tucked away in places like pubs and restaurants. In fact, booths of this vintage are a lot more common than you might think.
Old phone booths like this are usually re-purposed as broom closets or storage space. That is what makes this booth unusual: It has a working payphone inside, and the phone is actively used by customers and employees of the establishment. This phone serves as a public telephone and as the business line for the pub.

The overhead light still works. The fan does not.

These old booths are not completely gone from New York. Among many others I spotted this old beauty at a Manhattan pub in March, 2012…
