Amphawa, Thailand
Along the Mae Klong River. It's possible to pull a boat right up to the booth, tie up and make a call. The town still has a lot of its canals, unlike a lot of Thailand's river cities (including Bangkok), where the canals have been paved over. Other old ways, like phone booths, persist as well. I'm happy to report that phone booths don't seem to be in any danger of disappearing in Thailand, despite the fact that the country's prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, is the owner of the country's biggest mobile phone service provider. Everyday, new phone booths are being installed by the state-owned Telephone Organisation of Thailand (TOT) and a private provider, TelecomAsia. There are sometimes complaints in the daily papers that the unregulated installation of phone booths has blocked a street or sidewalk. Photo and comments by Curtis W

Portis, Kansas - Portis, KS, in front of the City Office, with the BugWing in the background. I had a really interesting encounter in this little place. As I got ready to leave I looked in the rear view mirror of the BugWing and saw what turned out to be a 1931 Chevy with a big round flashing red antique police light. A guy rolled it out of an old abandoned gas station, put on a conductor's hat, and "pulled me over." He said he was the "self-appointed constable" of the town, but also said his grandfather, years ago, had been the actual constable there. I also learned he IS the sanitation department there and picks up trash in his El Camino, but it takes two runs for him to get the trash for the whole town. Photo added by Rex

New Bern, North Carolina - I spent over 35 years working for Western Electric/AT&T and now my pension check comes from Lucent Technologies. The phone booth was offered by my neighbor who acquired it in Havelock NC by someone wanting to get rid of it. It was in bad shape with 1/2 of the windows broken. I rehabed it, repainted it and installed it in the yard. I believe it is a circa 1934 booth from England. It currently has a false phone in it since the price of pay phones has gone up. I recently was given a pedestal pay phone which I am going to add to the booth. Phone doesn't have a number but if I ever decided to supplement my retirement funds by activating I will let you know. This is an interesting phone, the best time to call it would be mid-afternoon, sometimes there is a strange fellow waiting there that I've talked to a couple times, he seems to be waiting for calls. On New Year's Eve someone decided that it would be funny to rip apart this phone so, for a month or so, it was in a dismantled state.
